A special coffee...

Today marked a very special day. murky coffee was a buyer in the 2006 El Salvador Cup of Excellence auction.

By now, you're hopefully aware of our total commitment to offering the best that coffee has to... um... offer.

Redundancy aside, a problem can arise when you're as obsessed with great coffee as we are.
The best (and often the most expensive) coffees that Counter Culture offers have become more and more popular among the many folks who proudly serve Counter Culture Coffee. One of the primary reasons we work with Counter Culture for our coffee is because of the green (pre-roasted) coffee sourcing efforts of CCC's Director of Coffee, Peter Giuliano.

The best coffee drinks require, in addition to great barista skills and experience, great roasted coffee. Great roasted coffees require, in addition to great roaster skills and experience, great green coffee... and those best green coffees are in painfully scarce supply. So you can understand our conundrum when we're unable to carry some of these special coffees for very long because Counter Culture sells out of them. The answer? Score our own green!

So just what is The Cup of Excellence?
The Cup of Excellence is a strict competition that selects the very best coffee produced in that country for that particular year. These winning coffees are chosen by a select group of national and international cuppers and are cupped at least five different times during the competition process. The final winners are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence and sold to the highest bidder during an internet auction. (from cupofexcellence.org)
So in a short few weeks, we'll be thrilled to offer the 2006 El Salvador Cup of Excellence winner, "Chalchuapa Malacara" (named for the region and farm). Until then, enjoy ALL of the great coffees that our continued partnership with Counter Culture brings us. As always, grind 'em fresh and brew 'em properly!!!

Oh, and if you're at all interested in REALLY learning about coffee, we'll be scheduling our Coffee for Connoisseurs classes soon. Whether you're a wine-geek who's looking for a new challenge, a simple coffee-lover, or anything in between, we hope our seminars will be the building blocks toward a true appreciation for coffee and all of the complexities within. Stay tuned!
