With apologies...
Effective immediately, we will serve espresso "for here," in ceramic demitasse cups only. No espresso in paper cups to-go, no espresso over ice in plastic cups.

This is another thing we can thank *$ for! People use the Ghetto latte method for ripping of *$ and then some prick has to introduce this to a REAL coffee shop. Thanks a lot *$... may the wings of a demon carry you to your grave!!!
Adam,
You're right that the "ghetto latte" (a term which I still believe that murky coffee baristas made up back in early 2003) sucks, but that's not the reason for the change in policy.
To serve an exquisitely pulled double espresso into a ceramic espresso demitasse, atop its proper saucer and served with a demitasse spoon, is a exceedinly rare and wonderful thing: a small beverage, powerful in flavor, fleeting in its volume (due to the dissipating 'crema' foam), and subtle in its sweetness.
That same 2 ounces, by the time it gets 50 feet outside of our doors, has now dissipated into a paltry one ounce. The lack of heat retention of the paper cup that it's inescapably carried out in, as well as the flatness of the cup-bottom, effectively sucks the life out of the espresso.
We've served espresso in small paper cups "to-go," for one reason and one reason alone: we want to serve our customers the best coffee and espresso known to mankind, and who are we to mandate how and where it is consumed? We want to "meet you where you are" as a customer, and don't want to play coffee-nazi whenever we can.
On the other hand, there's the fact that it is abomination against all that is good and true and warm and fuzzy about espresso. This fact has been staring me in the face these past few days, and so I've decided to make this decision.
It is for the "right reasons;" I hope folks will understand. For those who don't, or won't... well, let's see what this "coffee-nazi" thing is all about.
Thanks for understanding.
Are you offering the option for people to purchase their own ceramic demitasse? How about a "bring your own" demitasse (realizing, though, how much better the crema and flavor sustain in a pre-heated cup)? No doubt, it would be pretty cool to see the ultra-cultured, espresso-enlightened hipsters walking the streets of your fair city with a ceramic demitasse of espresso!
Nick it's a great move. We've been itching to do the same thing for a while now and we're right on the verge. Paper cups just don't do shots justice, and half the time they finish them by the time they get to the door anyway. We have 4oz branded cups so it's not motivated by the ghetto latte either.
Kudos.
I think that in seven years as a barista (at least one of which was serving drinkable coffee ;P) I have never actually had a customer order an espresso to takeaway. Still, that might well just be because straight 'spro is like 2% of sales here ... what is it for y'all?
Speaking of 'spro ... Nim and I are still salivating in anticipation over the aida blend ...
Cheers,
Luca
