Price change... notice to customers
August 17, 2007
Dear murky coffee customer,
We hope that you've enjoyed the quality of coffee experience that murky coffee offers every day; we've definitely enjoyed serving you.
For better or worse, there are certain realities that we all face, and one of those is that the numbers don't lie.
Over the past few years of our service to you, especially since our last price increase two years ago, the costs involved in delivering to you the best coffee experience we can have increased significantly--from the costs of every ingredient (especially our coffee beans and our milk), to fuel surcharges, to rent, to the cost of the additional training that every murky coffee barista undergoes.
As a result, and as you can see, we have needed to raise our prices.
We hope that you will continue to find value in what we serve you, and we in turn pledge to remain ever committed to providing you the best coffee experience that we can, continuing to improve our quality of service in every way we can.
As always, feel free to contact me for any comment or questions.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Cho

No worries. It's worth it to have great local coffee served from a skilled staff. You've got my support.
Just don't let us catch you rolling in a gold plated Benz.
Other coffee shops have raised their prices too, but your price increase is absurd. There is no coffee shop that charges $0.65 for soy milk. And I never understood the extra charge for soy milk anyway.
Dear 2nd "anonymous,"
No coffee shop charges $0.65 for soy milk, because no coffee shop uses the soy milk that we do.
Pacific Foods Soy Blenders. We use it because we've tried dozens of soy milks, and it is head-and-shoulders better quality than any we've tried for coffee-use... which makes sense, because it was specifically designed for use with coffee.
The price increase is absolutely tied to the fact that we use the best ingredients that we can. Feel free to email me anytime, and I'd be happy to talk about this with you.
I'd get in touch with you, but I don't know how to get in touch with an "anonymous."
Hey Nick,
I love Murky Coffee as much as the next guy. Nobody likes price increases, and push back is inevitable. That being said, I do have to agree that the new prices are very high and they were high to begin with. I realize you are segmenting your product from the pack by providing "the best coffee available" with the "best ingredients". You are focusing on high quality rather than turning into a coffee "bodyshop" that Starbuck is. But I really feel you need to find ways to trim the fat in other areas of the business without raising prices so significantly. I still come to Murky since the increase, but not as often. I've moved to using my Bodum French Press daily (yes Murky, you opened my eyes to it), and make Murky a rare treat now.
I recommend outsourcing latte production to China.
Hopefully the price increase will allow a pay increase for the baristas! They make some fine coffee. Who won the in-house barista competition?
With the increase in price, will we see any change in the attitude of the baristas? Namely, elimination of the pervasive smug, elitist attitude. You guys may have the best coffee in town, but if I'm paying ~$5 for a latte I'd also expect to be treated with a baseline level of respect - as they, or anyone would expect to be treated. The Golden Rule.
It's to the point where I can actually stomach the crap from Starbucks because their service comes without attitude. And it's bareable since I don't feel like I sold myself out for the 'privilege' of being served a Murky.
