Nick writes:

We've made a bit of a switch.

Our whole-bean coffees, for both drip-brew and retail sales, are now supplied by Counter Culture Coffee from Durham, North Carolina.

I don't want to write too much about this, for the coffee speaks for itself. I do encourage you to visit their website at counterculturecoffee.com. The folks at Counter Culture represent the best of the best in our industry: total committment to quality, total committment to environmental sustainability, and total committment to being cool cats. Their slogan, "Coffee driven people... people driven coffee" says it all.

A change like this doesn't come without some mixed feelings. The folks at Mayorga Coffee are awesome people doing some awesome things, and I wish them nothing but the best in their current and future endeavors. Sometimes, it boils down to who's the best match, and Counter Culture has proven to be an ideal partner to continue our little coffee-journey with.

So what does this mean to you, the loyal murky coffee customer? There's a saying in our business: The proof is in the cup. I won't go on and on with tales of roasting and green selection and travels to coffee growing origins... a visit to their website will satisfy any hankerin' for such information. Well, I'll just say that we have a little saying of our own, "Totally committed to serving the people of Washington the best damn coffee there is... yes, we said 'damn'." This coffee from Counter Culture makes me wanna use a stronger word than 'damn.'

But I won't.

A last couple of quick items... there will be a slight price increase at both shops to reflect our higher costs. It will NOT be reflective of the actual increase of our 'cost of goods...' let's call it 'splitting the difference.' The highest quality coffee tends to be a little expensive, but I trust that you'll find the cost justified.

Finally, we'll be stepping up our coffee offerings in other ways as well. French-press coffees will be offered at both shops, in two different sizes. We'll also start scheduling coffee-tastings on a regular basis, giving you an opportunity to taste various coffees side-by-side, as well as a chance to learn more about the coffees and where the come from. For those of you who know Aaron Ultimo, he will very soon be assuming the role of "Resident Coffee Guru," sharing his ever-growing knowledge of coffee and espresso with both the staff and our customers.

This is a very exciting time at murky coffee! Oh yeah, and don't forget to wish (our Southeast Regional Barista Competition champion) Ryan Jensen luck as he begins preparations for the United States Barista Championship, March 8-13 in Seattle, WA. Go Ryan! REPRESENT!
